Understanding and Diagnosing Rear Differential Noise

 · What happens when the hot differential meets cool water is that a vacuum phenomenon appears that rapidly sucks air or water inside. Gear oils can handle air but just a few on the market can handle water contamination and still provide adequate lubrication. Essentially gear oils break down when water is added into the mixture.

What You Need to Know When Selecting Gear Oils

The viscosity for a gear lubricant is primarily chosen to provide a desired film thickness between interacting surfaces at a given speed and load. Because it is difficult to determine the load for most viscosity selection methods, the load is assumed and the determining factor becomes speed.

10 Reasons Why Your Car's Engine is Leaking Oil

 · The valve cover gaskets tend to wear out after some time because of the heat and the effect that rubbers are getting hardened over time so that oil may drip from them. The valve cover gaskets are often visible from the outside of the engine, and it is pretty easy to see if the leak comes ….

A Short Course on Automatic Transmissions

 · Few transmissions have drain plugs to drain the old fluid. In order to get the fluid out, the technician removes the transmission oil pan. This is quite a messy job and generally not recommended for the casual do-it-yourselfer. Even if the transmission has a drain plug, the only way to also change the transmission filter is to remove the pan.

Engine oil in transmission

Also, don't forget to show her where engine oil goes, and where transmission fluid goes, and what each liquid looks like, so that she doesn't ever have this problem again. If you have to, tell her to look for both the OIL cap, and/or the 710 cap. You should get a good chuckle out of that, even if she doesn't understand why its funny. BC.

What To Do When Your Transmission Is Overheating

A normal "healthy" lubricated transmission operates at or below 175 degrees; anything higher than this breaks down your transmission fluid. Now, when the light comes on indicating that your transmission is overheating, it means that your vehicle is functioning at 250 degrees, which is considered "extremely high" temperature.

5 Reasons Your Car Might Be Losing or Leaking Oil

 · The most common reason this happens and gets missed, is that someone over-tightened an oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket or didn't distribute the tightness evenly across the whole gasket. When this happens, it can cause the gasket to get "squished," which creates a place for oil to escape.

The Effects and Signs of Too Much Transmission Fluid

 · Transmission Whining, Humming, or Grinding; This is one of the most difficult to diagnose because of the transmission's proximity to the engine. Noise coming from the motor is often louder than those coming from the transmission. As such, it is not surprising why many vehicle owners miss this sign of excessive transmission fluid.

Checking the gearbox oil level, draining and refilling

On a rear-wheel-drive car check the rear end of the gearbox. A leak here usually comes from a failed extension-housing oil seal. You can disconnect the propeller shaft to renew this (See Replacing transmission oil seals). On a front-wheel-drive car, check the oil seals at the drive shafts for leaks (See How to check U-Joints).

Why Is My Diesel Engine Pushing Oil Out the Dipstick?

Oil dipstick tubes come in two types, submerged and open. An open dipstick tube pokes a little way down into your block, but likely not past the bottom of the block casting and certainly not into the oil itself.
